December 10th, 2011

Hardship and trauma found no place to fester and take in the lives of children I had the privilege of meeting in the Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Program. Their inspirational teacher, Mr Ian Hale accompanied the scholars to a showing of the work and from him, I gleaned the following information.

National and international companies have commissioned artworks to be completed by these gifted and talented children. The most expensive piece came in at $10,000 and hangs within the entrance foyer at 175 Castlereagh St. Sydney inside a head office. The entire worth of art sold for that year of 2009 was $40,000 which was used by The Student Enterprise Group to finance the Extension Program.

*CEOs have commissioned works which include paintings of their homes, offices or landscapes.

* Two students were selected to obtain their work hung within the Gallery of NSW

*Two students have entered the Archibald prize

*Students selected to obtain their work hung within an International Student Exhibition in Nagoya

*Student selected to have their artwork hung within the Department Of Education Calendar for Cultural diversity 2009

All of these children happen to be selected to sign up within the Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Primary School Program held at Fairfield High. They may go on to the Primary School Extension Program. Once they are in Senior high school, the extension program continues.

The main School project is funded through the South Western Sydney Region but all of the Extension Programs are funded by The Student Enterprise Group.

One student had spent ten years inside a refugee camp, where both his parents died. He’s known war and loss and even though last three years have been spent happily with his adoptive parents around australia, he has been separated from his surviving siblings. He has not been to rural Australia but country landscapes are his favourite means of expression. Films, books and photos are this child must inspire his talents and enrich his concept of Australia. Whilst incarcerated, drawing and sketching were a means of escape and proved to be an enriching experience which gave him joy. It’s impossible to judge the advantage art has played in assisting this young man be a well-adjusted and happy person. He was a classic delight and set a positive spin onto everything. This was confirmed by his peers and teacher.

The gentleness of an enchanting 11 year old girl was reflected in the utilization of softness and lightweight in her own painting. She spoke towards the viewer through her tenderness. Her work was captivating and did not reveal the nightmares her family had experienced.

Another 11 year old sees the planet in the fashion and isn’t afraid to think outside the square. His use of acrylics and layering of colours in the impression of the Sydney Harbour Bridge was not dissimilar towards the style of the renowned artist Martin Sharpe.

A fourteen year old girl is constantly on the paint despite oils, with her finger. This talented woman so enjoyed shading colours by hand like a tot, she is constantly on the use this mode of painting. It had been impossible to inform that the sailing boat disappearing right into a misty morning have been executed by doing this. It was also impossible to discern that they have been born in a war torn country coupled with known anxiety and stress.

People of every age group handle grief differently. A fourteen years old girl was one of three sisters born in Vietnam. Her work is a tribute to her half – sister who remains there and also to the memory of various other sister who died of starvation. She intends that her ‘letter’ art brings by using it all of the passion and excitement of good news and hope while none-the-less becoming fitting tribute to her lost sister.

20% of all NSW state school children dwell within the South Western Sydney Region. It has the 3rd largest youth population in NSW and one third of the young people are unemployed. It is wonderful that 2000 children took part within this marvellous program. What’s going to the ultimate harvest yield? In the group of students I spoke with, some indicated they would like to pursue art as a career while some were unsure about opportunities, but very definite about art always becoming an outlet for emotion along with a satisfying hobby.
